Berkeley County South Carolina is one of the fastest growing areas in the Southeastern United States. It’s proximity to Charleston SC, large land mass and available recreation makes Berkeley County a desirable place to live. The population of Berkeley County exceeded 150,000 in 2004 and key towns and cities include Moncks Corner, Daniel Island, Goose Creek, St. Stephens and Hanahan.
English and French Huguenot planters settled the area in the late 1600s. Lord Proprietors at the time referred to the area surrounding Charles Towne (today Charleston) as Berkeley County coming from Lord John Berkeley and Sir William Berkeley. Several historic national figures including General Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox attacked British troops from the swamps and forests of the area, and today the Francis Marion National Forest is named in his honor.
Daniel Island SC is has been one of the fastest growing communities in the Charleston SC area. In less than 10 years Daniel Island has grown to over 5,300 residents with a projected total population of over 13,000 in 2013 when the development is completed. While part of Berkeley County, Daniel Island is also a part of the City of Charleston enjoying police, fire and other services from the city. Daniel Island is also home to the Family Circle Cup Stadium and tennis tournament, as well as to the Nationwide Golf Tour’s Palmetto Pride Classic in November at the Daniel Island Golf Club.
